Appraisal
Of what the site is representative in a Mediterranean context? The site presents the typical physical and meteorological conditions of the Mediterranean context. In fact it has a very significant hydro-geological vulnerability, presence of coastal zones with hill and mountain influences (proximity), and an agricultural sector characterised by almost 60% of the surface harvested in Mediterranean crops (vineyards, olive trees and orchards)
Which is the relevance of applying DeSurvey to the site?DeSurvey could describe the relationship between land degradation, and certain land uses vulnerability, and agricultural policies/farmers attitudes
Might the site be complementary of other conditions? The site is very interesting in analysing water use in agriculture and the relationship between environment protected areas (the Maiella National Park is inside the Site) and land degradation
Might the site allow comparative analysis with other sites?Yes It~s already used for comparative analysis with other EU sites in the agro-environmental sector (pesticides uses, erosion risks, etc.)
Which is the relative impact of policy/subsidized, market and subsistence economy on land use structure? In some areas of the coastal hillsides, the CAP has had a huge impact on the durum wheat mono-culture development. The wine OCM policy has stabilised an intensive viniculture. The olive trees subsidies have had a significant contribute in maintaining the traditional landscape (without developing an intensive olive - growing). The livestock subsidies has had a significant contribute in maintaining the traditional semi-intensive breeding, with low environmental impact. The fruit and vegetables OCM policies have instead produced an high intensive agriculture in some irrigated areas.
Which are the potential users of DeSurvey products in the site?Region, Province, Municipalities, Land Reclamation and Irrigation Consortium Professional Agricultural Organisations, Regional Environmental Agency, Universities and research centres.
